Professor of Road and Vehicle Safety-Safe and Smart Mobility Research Cluster
Pete Thomas is the Professor of Road and Vehicle Safety at Loughborough University and the Academic Lead of the Smart Mobility Living Lab CAV test bed, a new £17 million Government investment in London. He is a leading figure in the development of road and vehicle safety policy resources and has led the establishment of the European Road Safety Observatory. He is closely involved in the development and evaluation of automated driving systems.
Recent research includes the development of safety assurance methodologies for autonomous urban shuttles. The team is also conducting research into the safety behaviours of drivers and other road users. New experimental methods are being used to unobtrusively observe the actions and responses of drivers under normal driving conditions. The data resources are also now driving forward new developments of virtual verification and validation procedures to be used for autonomous vehicles and ADAS systems.
